Meeting minutes
- (19:00) Jeremie: This is the fifty-seventh weekly meeting about the Learning Area :)
- (19:00) Jeremie: Agenda is there: https://wiki.mozilla.org/MDN/Projects/Content/Learning_Area/Weekly_meetings/2015-10-05
- (19:00) Jeremie: Feel free to add anything you want to discuss.
- (19:00) Jeremie: And as usual: who's attending? :D
- (19:00) klez: o/
- (19:00) klez: jeremie, you should make a macro for your introduction :P
- (19:01) jsx: o/
- (19:01) Jeremie: klez: I'm considering it :P
- (19:02) Sphinx: o/
- (19:02) Jeremie: Yeah :)
- (19:02) Jeremie: Okay, let's get started
- (19:03) Jeremie: There is no action item from last week (I even remove the one I get, more about this at the end of the meeting)
Learning CSS
- (19:03) Jeremie: My last week e-mail get no answers:
- (19:03) Jeremie: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/mozilla.dev.mdc/E-suuRPDnSA/oOgrsePlBwAJ
- (19:03) Jeremie: That imply that we are good to go with the plan a suggested >:-)
- (19:04) klez: I suppose so
- (19:04) Jeremie: Obviously, anyone feeling it needs to be rethink can jump into the discussion
- (19:04) Jeremie: However, I create a bunch of related trello card to implement it:
- (19:04) Jeremie: https://trello.com/c/NAuDmn9u
- (19:05) Jeremie: I plan to spend the next weeks into this.
- (19:05) Jeremie: Anyone who want to help is welcome :D
- (19:06) Jeremie: I expect to have every think done by the end of November
- (19:06) Sphinx: :)
- (19:06) Jeremie: (It's mostly revamping existing content)
- (19:06) Sphinx: Jeremie: do you have something to flag the article as "being done" vs "done" ?
- (19:06) Jeremie: Sphinx: Not sure what you mean
- (19:07) Sphinx: (like in "done, can be localized now" ^ ^)
- (19:07) klez: would the {{draft}} macro be appropriate?
- (19:07) Jeremie: Sphinx: A okay, on trello the column done mean that, and on MDN, look for the {{draft}} macro
- (19:08) Sphinx: OK perfect
- (19:08) Sphinx: thanks
- (19:08) Jeremie: You should also think twice before translating something that require both editorial and technical review
- (19:08) Sphinx: yeah definitely
- (19:09) Jeremie: Okay, any question about the plan about CSS ?
- (19:09) Sphinx: (none here)
Trello board review
- (19:10) Jeremie: https://trello.com/b/LDggrYSV
- (19:10) klez: my trello card (python tutorial basics) is proceeding
- (19:10) klez: slowly
- (19:10) Jeremie: \o/
- (19:10) klez: I subdivided the chapters as suggested by heather
- (19:11) klez: and moved some stuff to the 'installation' part as suggested by jeremie
- (19:11) klez: basically, the stuff about getting to know the interpreter and the hello world
- (19:11) klez: the part about running scripts from the command line is going there too, but needs to be rewritten
- (19:12) klez: also, some stuff needs some rewording as it was meant to be read in a different order
- (19:12) klez: so yeah, there's stuff to do
- (19:12) klez: the good news is that someone wrote a whole sub-section
- (19:12) Sphinx: :)
- (19:12) klez: the bad news is that it needs heavy reviewing
- (19:12) klez: so I've got that too going for me
- (19:12) klez: which is nice
- (19:12) klez: in a way :P
- (19:13) Sphinx: ^-^
- (19:13) Jeremie: Review is always nice :)
- (19:13) Sphinx: klez which page does need review?
- (19:13) klez: Sphinx: the one about lists
- (19:13) klez: it's a bit at odd with the rest of the tutorial
- (19:13) klez: both in terms of formatting and in terms of tone
- (19:13) Sphinx: ok I'll try to see that this week (probably Wednesday or Thursday)
- (19:14) klez: that would be great, thanks :)
- (19:14) klez: PTO?|
- (19:14) Sphinx: vacation
- (19:14) klez: oh, right :)
- (19:14) klez: you remind me of myself a couple months ago :P
- (19:14) bassam: Paid Time Off
- (19:14) Jeremie: :)
- (19:14) Sphinx: klez: could you comment the card with my handle please ?
- (19:14) sheppy: What section is it that needs all the reviewing?
- (19:15) klez: sure, when I get home tonight
- (19:15) klez: sheppy, mostly the one about lists
- (19:15) Sphinx: klez: np, I'll add myself actually then
- (19:15) sheppy: klez: I see
- (19:15) klez: Sphinx: thanks
- (19:16) Sphinx: Jeremie: about Trello, does l10n has a place here or not?
- (19:16) Jeremie: Sphinx: Yes :)
- (19:16) Jeremie: Sphinx: Example of this https://trello.com/c/j2Ph2xw7
- (19:17) klez: (I'm always amazed about how you french guys use here/there :P)
- (19:17) bassam: loooool
- (19:17) Jeremie: XD
- (19:17) Sphinx: :')
- (19:18) Jeremie: Between this week and the next I intent to do some clean up on old cards (some to be removed some to be merged) I'll ask every time it's necessary but let me know if there are cards that you want to keep or kill no matter what.
- (19:18) klez: jeremie, do you think it's necessary to split the python cards now that we have separate pages for each sub-section?
- (19:19) sheppy: As something of a student of the English language, I’m always fascinated by the little quirks in usage and grammar mistakes of non-native writers. It’s an interesting study of the language’s complexities and the ways various other languages differ.
- (19:19) Jeremie: klez: It's up to you
- (19:19) sheppy: klez: I would.
- (19:19) Sphinx: sheppy: please correct me every time
- (19:19) sheppy: I think it’ll be easier to track stuff if you do.
- (19:20) klez: ok, I'll try to split them later or tomorrow
- (19:20) Jeremie: +1 with sheppy, that's what I ddi for CSS (a meta card for tracking the global view then a card per article)
- (19:20) sheppy: It’s totally up to you but that’d be my advice.
- (19:20) klez: Jeremie: I didn't think of that approach, might go with that
- (19:21) sheppy: Yeah, that’s a good approach.
- (19:22) Jeremie: Okay, anything more about Trello before we move on?
- (19:23) Heather: o/
- (19:23) Jeremie: Hi Heather :)
- (19:23) Heather: hi sorry i'm late
- (19:23) Jeremie: np
- (19:24) klez: sup heather :)
- (19:24) Heather: hey klez :)
- (19:24) Sphinx: Heather: hello :) basically, Jeremie was asking if you had something more to say about Trello :)
- (19:25) klez: heather, we were doing trello board review, anything to share?
- (19:25) Heather: hi Sphinx thanks for the update :)
- (19:25) klez: yep, shpinx beat me
- (19:25) klez: aaaand I can't type XD
- (19:25) klez: you should see what keyboard I'm using
- (19:25) Heather: i see Jeremie was busy with trello i was getting updates like mad
- (19:26) Jeremie: :)
- (19:26) Heather: nothing to share currently
- (19:26) Heather: sorry :(
- (19:26) Jeremie: I plan to do some clean up so, next week I'l do a review of what's need to be clean during the meeting
- (19:26) Heather: okay
September metrics
- (19:27) Jeremie: Metrics for September are available:
- (19:27) Jeremie: https://wiki.mozilla.org/images/d/dd/Learning_Area_September_2015.pdf
- (19:27) Jeremie: shpinx: I change the world map to a list of country as requested
- (19:28) shpinx: Jeremie: awesome :)
- (19:28) shpinx: thanks
- (19:28) Jeremie: I did some math in order to give you an overview of your remarquable success:
- (19:28) sheppy: Hm. Would be nice if it included a comparison to the previous month or whatever.
- (19:29) Jeremie: Since January, we grow our users by 73%
- (19:29) Heather: nice
- (19:29) sheppy: Wow, nice.
- (19:29) Jeremie: and 103% pageviews
- (19:30) Heather: woot woot
- (19:30) shpinx: \m/
- (19:30) Jeremie: sheppy: I don't know how to automate that with Google Analitycs
- (19:30) sheppy: Jeremie: teoli might be able to help. I have to assume it’s possible, since it seems like an obvious statistic to want...
- (19:31) Jeremie: IMO our biggest achievement is that in January, the whole Learning Area represented 1% of MDN pageviews... now it's 1.66% and counting (remember that the overall number of page vie on MDN is also growing)
- (19:32) Jeremie: Thanks to all for the amazing job you did... I expect some crazy statistic fo rthe end of the year (and an excuse to celebrate)
- (19:33) klez: yay!
- (19:33) shpinx: klez, Heather, andrew and Jeremie congrats :)
- (19:34) klez: :)
- (19:34) Jeremie: shpinx: I think you are also part of it ;)
- (19:34) Jeremie: As usual, let me know if you are looking for some specific metrics and I'll see what can I do to get them
- (19:35) Jeremie: Okay, any question before moving forward?
- (19:35) sheppy: Everyone’s doing so much great work here — the Learning area has become a really great example of community activity in MDN content.
Twitter storytelling
- (19:37) Jeremie: Unfortunately, dvincent cannot be here
- (19:38) Heather: :)
- (19:38) Jeremie: Still, if you have story that worth tweeting, share them and she'll get into the meeting log :)
- (19:38) shpinx: Jeremie: well I don't know if the "abbreviation" exercise was published on twitter
- (19:38) shpinx: it seems pretty cool to me :)
- (19:39) Jeremie: shpinx: I don't think so but I agree (I did it :P)
- (19:39) shpinx: like "hey we're also doing live stuff here"
- (19:41) Jeremie: shpinx: Yes
- (19:42) shpinx: Jeremie, dvincent: I also love this one https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Learn/page_vs_site_vs_server_vs_search_engine (since it lists common misconceptions for beginners)
- (19:42) Jeremie: Yes :)
- (19:42) Jeremie: I also update the doc status page with some content about plan and goals, so I think it would worth sending a general call to help: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/MDN/Doc_status/Learn#Get_involved
- (19:42) Heather: good one
- (19:44) Jeremie: Okay, any last question or topic to discuss before we end that meeting?
- (19:44) Heather: nothing here
- (19:44) shpinx: I'm good (dinner's calling ;))
- (19:44) sheppy: That page needs renaming so badly :)
