DRAFT Notes
- Preparation for friends week in Mountain View -- think about what we'd like to achieve as a team being as we'll all be in one spot at one time e.g.,
- prep for India
- Firefox 3 new things we can do
- L10n goals/planning for what we want to do in 2008 and Q1 of 08
all.html; amo globalized issues
- Chatzilla requirements (Mic/Wil)
- ACTION: mic to look for 3 1 to 2 hour time slots over the week when we can all meet as a team and tackle various topics
- QA update
- won't finish in time for B1
- produce reference files first
- still bouncing around on date, possibly Wednesday, most likely Monday chance also for Friday
- main driving factor is how much time QA needs
- no need for more process; so long as localizers feel confidence that their community will like it (if QA doesn't have time to test)
- Beta 1 update/
- spent bunch of time running through diffs for productization files for all locales that opted in in time
- bunch of stuff that shouldn't have happened the way it did; a bunch of stuff that was supposed to be as is; some stuff that was purposely done incorrectly
- conclusion some level of creativity around process or ignorance which means that there is real eagerness to ship
- hard to assess who is overly optimistic
- made some calls to not ship
- 2 or 3 locales still having changes to search that are well intended but not documented; rounding these up and getting clarifications
- Pascal checked all pages for new locales; they are ok; no holds for snippets for B1
- for Fx3 will be changing snippets, this is future
- 20+ languages for Beta 1 is awesome
- Fx 3 update
- worth it to have wiki page with status across all locales for web services, technical reviews, QA review, and snippets
- Smartware now has 26 locales they can test vs last years 14 - awesome!!
- Indic languages (Hindi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, Kannada, Malyalam, Telegu, Bengali)
- French, German, Italian, Iberian and Latin American Spanish, Japanese, Simplified & Traditional Chinese, Korean, Russian, Portuguese
- Turkish, Arabic, Hebrew, Polish, Dutch, Danish
- SUMO
- help area, FAQs and place for people to really get help on their issues; general support
- algorithms; being able to discover changes and prioritize edits
- tracking changes is a problem for localizations
- teams have their own glossaries; they have official documents; glossaries they share with other applications; we don't have a centralized one
- glossaries will probably come up as part of tools discussion
- Tools update
- glossaries and the like will be coming up in Tools discussions and is being considered there
- looking at tools to do a variety of things
- which strings are still to be translated
- do we have right people at right tool - e.g., is particular team good at web apps or desktop apps, translation algorithms, etc
- working on Google document that articulates these concepts
- how to ask right questions of tools proposers to understand if something is good or bad; trying to ensure folks feel good about the questions we ask; feedback is very mixed
- will take us a bit of time to sort through all feedback and types of feedback
- ACTION: WilC watch what we develop and questions we ask cause there may be value in overlap of concepts although AMO is different
- Community Dev update
- not much news
- launched Spanish Portal, good press coverage, new users registering, first portal with XUL
- AMO update
- nothing new
- locale packs for add-ons
- Goals
- forum thread
- ask Lilly for his dump on new ideas and view of 2008 at one of our L10n meetings during friends week
