Project Summary

Hyperaudio is an audio/video in-browser remixing platform that invites anyone to create their own new media narratives using locally produced content. In partnership with the Chattanooga Public Library, the Hunter Museum of American Art, the Public Education Foundation, and the Chattanooga History Center, Hyperaudio has teamed up with local content providers in Chattanooga to develop a content remixing curriculum with measurable educational outcomes for both informal and formal learning environments

Project Timeline

  • Week 1: Allocate amended budget and source initial content.
  • Week 2: Establish breakdown of tasks and availability of developers, quotes from third party transcription services.
  • Week 3: Assess quotes from third parties, publicize blog/twitter/google groups.
  • Week 4: Estimate / prioritise / plan tasks. Consult with partners. Begin development.
  • Week 5: Transcribe material, align suitable content.
  • Week 6: Test material and create chattanooga.hyperaud.io.
  • Week 7: Integrate content and roll out new features.
  • Week 8: Test new features and continue to add content.
  • Week 9: Integrate content and roll out new features.
  • Week 10: Customise front page, roll out new features.
  • Week 11: Testing
  • Week 12: Testing / Release

Metrics and Outcomes

Technical Outcomes

We will build a customized local version of the Hyperaudio system with teaching specific areas including but not limited to:

  • increased stability
  • the addition of compatibility with self hosted media (not just YouTube)
  • a release of the Hyperaudio Maker to allow free transcription and time-alignment
  • a release of the Hyperaudio Cleaner to allow easy editing of transcripts
  • integration of search functionality into the system
  • a new feature: embed capabilities, so Hyperaudio mixes can be added to blogs and 3rd party sites
  • transcribe and time align media

Learning Outcomes

By participating in the pilot, 50 people will be learning the following...

  • How to search through media content using transcripts
  • How to share media content via transcripts
  • How to edit media content via transcripts
  • How to tell stories with media and basic media literacy skills
  • Local oral history

Hyperlocal Hyperaudio. We can measure things like:

  • number of times original content is viewed
  • number of times remixed content is viewed
  • number of unique remixes created from original content
  • number of times remixed content is commented on / shared on social media
  • clickthroughs on specific elements of the site
  • minutes and seconds worth of crowdsourced transcripted content
  • survey feedback from user groups

There are also qualitative means of assessment. These include:

  • anecdotal evidence
  • media response

Community Outcomes

In schools, or in libraries, Hyperaudio helps relate one’s own personal perspective to their greater cultural identity. It makes learning personal. The public library provides tools, media resources, space, and connectivity to the people of Chattanooga, and our staff develops dynamic programs to bring all of these community assets to life.
