Moving pages

Hi, thx for advice concerning SeaMonkey:Own Sync, I know that moving is the better way (I was Wikipedia Admin, long ago during the exciting early days). move with redirect

Dear GPHemsley,

I see you've done a bunch of good work maintaining the Mozilla wiki. Forgive me for only messaging you when things go wrong.

I see you recently moved several pages without leaving a redirect.

My understanding is that such moves without a redirect -- for example, page DOM:Home Page to DOM/Links -- instantly breaks all 7 internal Mozilla wiki links to that page and some unknown number of external links to that page.

How is this different from what Tim Berners-Lee ranted about in "Cool URIs don't change"?

Wouldn't it be better to move pages with a redirect, so people who click on those links still end up at the same content (but with a small note about the redirect)?

Thank you for your concern, and welcome back to the wiki! These pages were moved in anticipation of cleanup we will be doing shortly to eliminate unused and unnecessary namespaces.
