Following the mission of Mozilla about having an open Web and easy for everyone, and knowing about the poor interest in some native comunities in Mexico to have participation in the Web but they don't have any presence of this language in it. The Mozilla comunity in Mexico is organizing the first Translathon in Merida, Yucatan, it's a translations marathon, the mayan language on this case. This is for translation and location of Firefox in mayan language[1]; For the translation of Wikipedia in maya[2] that will be integrated on the search bar of location of Firefox in maya and add the "Endangered Languages Project" of Google[3]. Testimonies
In these days, when we agree to do this work, I uploaded to Facebook and I wrote: Who wants to participate just send me an email saying: I want to translate mayan. But I think just 10 people sent me their names and then I started calling one by one to other people I thought could help that day. Why? Because sometimes not all the people use new technology. I mean, it isn't because they don't want to do it, sometimes they just don't know where to do that work. Well today also appeard like another 10 people that didn't say they would come but they came though. So I guess we have to find another ways to call them because not all log into Facebook, so... How can they know? (Vicente Canché Moo, Mayan culture promotor). Listen to the podcast in mayan.
This is an opportunity and an example for people of my generation. If you look, here aren't too many young people, just some adults or people with some status or prestige in their works. But this can be taken as an example, as an invitation to others, to cheer them to take a look. If you see, this is without payment but we are here because we love it, because we want, and here we are doing our best to take strength in this. That's why I think is a great job but we have to do something to not leaving the things just like this, make it succeed, we have to work to make it true because we aren't working just to leave it like this, we are working to make it come out and be known. (Sáasil Sánchez, Translator of Firefox in Mayan) Listen to the podcast in mayan.
I think that all we are working this day, making the mayan writing and reading has his strength and we are going to give it all that strength; anyone can come and tell us that easy that we are doing it wrong. So if he or she says is that easy, we expect a person that teach us how to read and write mayan correctly, then I will learn. So, many of this critics come long time ago and how one of the teachers says: 2012 is the year when we have to give strength to the Mayan language. But this won't happen if we don't carry it in our heart. (Marcos Cauich, Translator of Wikipedia in Mayan) Listen to the podcast in mayan
