IMO this is best reserved as an extension. Gestures are something that mum and dad will never work out themselves and may not be all that good at (Mouse art is not the finest point of beginner computer users).
Global DPI or default page zoom?
Should a zoom feature be implemented, I propose a user setting for a user-configurable DPI setting or, alternatively, a default zoom level. The intended use of this feature would be to assist users whose machines combine a high resolution with a small screen, as is frequently the case in laptops. This situation is exacerbated for users with poor eyesight, as text and images are frequently too small for browsing to be comfortable.
Such a feature should not trigger horizontal scrolling unless the page will not reflow to fit the available number of horizontal css pixels for the user's zoom level and window size.
This and other scaling features depend on fixing the units in Gecko (bug 177805) which is tracking for Gecko 1.9
