Location:
- Brussels: Studio 201 A+B
- Toronto: Conference C
- Santa Clara: Santa Barbara
Track: Purpose and Strategy
Put practically and short term: how our values show up in the app ecosystem or social network (where the users are now). And, in the long term, how do our values show up in big data, internet of things and other upcoming ecosystems. What would it look like to build a mobile apps and content ecosystem based literally on the ideas in the Nature of Mozilla? What features and marketing approaches would you include? How would we most effectively balance building, teaching and shaping markets? Where do local communities fit in as part of building this? Can they help build a long tail app ecosystem where we really see local diversity?
Facilitators:
- Brussels: David Ascher, Paula Le Dieu
- Toronto: Chris Lawrence, Ben Moskowitz
- Santa Clara: Alina Mierlus, Erika Owens

How do we use our products and our voice to help the broader world--including users--understand the web and become champions with us?

The Webmaker Community is changing the face of education through collaborative, participatory events, kick ass tools and relevant learning activities for creativity and learning. At the same time, they're building a more Web Literate world by helping people understand that you don't have to be a programmer to understand the technical and social infrastructures of the Web.
In this session, we'll play games and discuss how building a web literate world is integral to everything we do, not just as Mozilla, but as people. We'll discuss how Mozilla is making this not only possible - but easily accessible through open tools, learning activities, invitations to participate in the discussions, guidance and direction and invention, innovation and inspiration. And we'll prototype ways for you to get involved.

The open web needs help from all kinds of people: browser vendors, browser users, coders, translators, bloggers, artists, tool makers, technology enthusiasts and much, much more—from all regions of the world. The Mozilla community already claimed victory over the proprietary, closed web landscape during the first browser wars. Join us to make a difference again by enabling a mobile Web accessible to all users regardless of their choice of browsers or devices. Join us in this Open Session to learn how to get involved as a Web Compatibility Ambassador and how each one of us can make a difference on the Web, no matter our level of technical expertise, experience within the Mozilla community, or even access to physical Firefox OS or Android devices. There is plenty of work to be done; let's do it together.

Contributing to a Localized Mozilla
Time: 14:45-16:00 (Brussels)
Location:
- Brussels: Studio 310
- Toronto: N/A
- Santa Clara: N/A
Since the last Mozilla Summit, the Mozilla localization community has grown extensively. Contributing to the localization effort has attempted to evolve with the community's growth, however, many elements of the l10n contribution path remain a mystery and unresolved. We'll discuss which parts of contributing to Mozilla l10n are challenging, alienating, and require selective skills. We'll discuss tools, strategies, and resources for building localization teams. Finally, we'll seek to come to a concensus on the expectations of all participants within Mozilla localization, from the L10n drivers to regional l10n teams to individual localizers.

Web Standards: How and why we standardize
Time: 1:00-2:15 (Toronto)
Location:
- Brussels: N/A
- Toronto: Windsor East
- Santa Clara: N/A
A discussion about standards and how Mozilla is and should be involved in standards. In particular, I probably want to spend the first 10-15 minutes giving some brief background about how I look at our involvement in standards (both in terms of what we do and why) and about how standardization works at the W3C. Then I'd like to open up to a discussion and questions about standardization: what do you want to know? What do you think we should or shouldn't be doing? Potential topics for discussion (though I'm very open to others): where to standardize, openness of standards process, patent policy, speed of process, getting the right parties involved, when the right time to standardize is, how to interact with and implement standards in development, speaking as an individual or on behalf of an organization, dealing with things that have to be private.

In the past few years, a lot of surveillance scandals have come to your sight (Carrier IQ, PRISM, Tempora, ...), and your devices are getting more and more closed (Secure Restricted Boot, smartphones with firmwares that can take over the control od the device, ...). But we're not screwed (yet). We have means to fight against this. This is an open session to talk about how we can get the control of your devices and digital lives back to us.
