Title of Session: Make Something Real for Firefox OS with Mozilla App Templates

Facilitator(s): tofumatt and zalun

Please downloads slides here.

Are you paid or volunteer staff?: Paid

Area of Contribution (Team Name): Web Dev

How are you currently involved with the community?: Work at Mozilla, give talks, onboard contributors

Location of Work (where do you reside?): tofumatt in Montreal, Canada || Piotr in UK

Talk Length (please choose between 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes): 60 minutes -- though we could go longer if needed.

Summary: Mozilla is preaching the awesomeness of web apps, but how do you build something cooler than another boring to-do app? tofumatt and Piotr work on the Developer Ecosystem team in webdev; they build tools to help developers build awesome web apps for Firefox OS and the Open Web. They'll be demoing Mozilla's new app and game libraries and templates -- including how to build 2D and 3D web games with no previous games experience and how to make your app -- or even game -- work on mobile devices.

Topics will include where to get started, resources, testing, best practices, and some design tips to make your apps way better than we've been used to seeing.

How your session furthers the MozCamp Goals (https://wiki.mozilla.org/MozCampEU2012/Tracks): B2G and Apps. (More developers and more apps means more users of the platform too.) Of course, relates to Desktop/Mobile/Firefox OS because the apps will run there, and we want to highlight mobile app/game development.

Expected Outcome or Deliverable: Developers are excited about the ease with which they can get into app, and especially game development, with examples and new knowledge about best practices and where to ask for more help. More good developers means more good apps which means actual user adoption (no one cares about a platform with no good apps).

Basically: let's get devs excited about building stuff beyond what they think is "easy" so they develop first-class apps on our platform. Let's not look like the Chrome App Store.

Desired Audience Type or Skill-set: Developers and those interested in app/game development. Talk can be tailored more towards games if the audience desire is there.

Equipment Needs (Video projector already included): MiniDisplay Port adapter for a MacBook Air should do the trick.

Update to the talk':

The easiest way to get working Firefox OS emulator is a prototype app made by Myk: http://people.mozilla.com/~myk/r2d2b2g/
