Welcome to the MDN Logo Design wiki!
We want to track our progress from creative brief to shiny new MDN logo! We'll keep this document updated with the latest notes and concepts, as well as the final images once we're done working with Studio Number One.
SNO Concepts Round 1 Feedback (2/3 - 2/4)
Arun's Feedback
- Comp1: Meh
- Comp2: Wow, there's something here. The angles are a little intimidating, but it shows a lot of promise.
- Comp3: Too generic, and too bland.
- Comp4: No!
- Comp5: I like this second best, second only to Comp2.
- Comp6: No!
- Comp7: No!
- Comp8: No!
Jay's feedback (favorites in bold)
- Comp 1: Flame
- I think of "igniting innovation"
- I see the letters mdn in the flame
- MDN typeface is hard to read, we need to stick to something that will work at various sizes and that will work well in many different applications
- I like the fact that it stands out on its own and inside a rounded block
- I like the color theme of red, white, black and gray... but hopefully we can expand on that for other alternative logos/segments.
- Comp 2: Robo Dino
- Typeface doesn't seem to fit, it feels too much like the QMO logo font
- Dino looks cool, but not sure about the wrench in the mouth... feels a bit cheesy, but it might grow on me.
- If we do go with the Robo Dino, it will be nice to have a more accurate conversion from the Mozilla Dino head or at least a more simple version that really stands out.
- Comp 3: Pixelated
- I like the concept, but think it needs to be polished a bit more.
- MDN looks cool in pixels, but again too hard to read. We could fix that though
- I do like the <> brackets and // slashes
- Maybe too simple? Needs something more visual to go with it.
- Comp 4: Eye
- I like the font A LOT. It is clean, modern, techy and easy to read. I think this should be the typeface we use with any new comps to see if it works... also interested in seeing "MDN" in that style.
- I don't get the eye... so looking forward to hearing the designers rationale
- Comp 5: Dino Gears
- Looks too much like a toy, not professional enough
- MDN typeface appears to be too complicated, though I do like the way the letters "fit" together. I was hoping for a similar approach, but in a more 3D cube or puzzle design.
- Gear just feels too cliche.
- Comp 6: Spidey Sense
- Again the typeface seems to work well
- I like that we can put it in a rectangular block and it looks good in monochrome
- Reminds me of spiderman... which is cool, but not the right direction for MDN. Maybe if we tried a similar design, but using all the letters in MDN?
- Comp 7: Revolution
- Not a huge fan of the typeface here, reminds me of the font in Comp 2.
- Love the fist logo... as it is shown on the main Comp 7 page (with wrench/lightning + circle + no nails on fingers), but it also looks good without the circle, which is nice.
- Fingers form an "M" to me... which is cool.
- I like the alternatives with the wrench only (C) and the wrench+lightening (B)... BUT just the lightning (A) doesn't work. Looks a bit weird.
- I like the arrangement of "Mozilla Developer Network" on the complete logo + wordmark designs... nice to have options.
- This is probably my favorite, but it would be better with the typeface from Comps 4 & 6 IMHO
- Comp 8: Atom
- Doesn't seem like a good fit for MDN
- Don't get the atom concept, so looking forward to hearing the designers rationale
- Comp 1: Flame
Gen's feedback (favorites in bold)
- Comp 1: Flame
- Unclear to me what the flame represents with respect to programming or developers.
- Comp 2: Robo Dino
- I like the robo dino but don't like the fonts of the MDN much. If we went with this, I'd like to see if the robo dino could be simplified a bit more to make it even more iconic. And a different font. Not sure I can explain what I don't like about it per se- it's just not memorable.
- Comp 3: Pixelated
- I get the idea, and it's cute in a way, but it's also kinda obscure and legibility is poor. Not what I would go with.
- Comp 4: Eye
- Unclear to me what the eye represents. I like this font a bit more than the Robo Dino font. Not what I would go with as it's not immediately clear what this is all about.
- Comp 5: Dino Gears
- If I had to choose, Robo Dino is a bit more compelling for me. I can see the connection with the MDN font here, but maybe its a bit too angular?
- Comp 6: Spidey Sense
- Similar to "Eye" I don't really get it.
- Comp 7: Revolution
- While there are aspects of this iconography that work for me, there are places where this iconography is despised (any Eastern European state that was subjugated by the USSR.) So I think this is actually not appropriate as a global icon as I think it means different things in different places.
- Comp 8: Atom
- Unclear to me.
Blizzard's Feedback
- Comp 1:
- Nope, not right.
- Comp 2:
- Like this one the best. Even like the wrench, which someone else thought was cheesy. Echos of the hacks brand, but has the robot feel. (I like robots!) Also, would look damn good on a t-shirt. An important consideration. Downside is that it looks a little different than just about every other logo and site that we have. But maybe that's OK. Fits into the doc system, though, as black on white is probably something we can build on for the general design for the entire developer site + MDN.
- Comp 3:
- Nope.
- Comp 4:
- Save that one for Weave! Or Test Pilot! :)
- Comp 5:
- Neat, but feels a little too out there. Can't tell what it is at first glance. Also, that dino IS A CYLON.
- Comp 6:
- Dude. Wireless. Feels a little bit too much like a set of angel wings.
- Comp 7:
- My second favorite after the dino heads. Very protest / old school banners. Doesn't echo the Mozilla brand well, though. Alternate marks are neat, too.
Sheppy's Feedback
- Comp 1:
- The idea is okay here, but it looks like someone's flipping the bird to me. I actually like the font used for "MDN" here but agree it wouldn't scale well.
- Comp 2:
- This is my favorite. I do like it with the wrench; I might actually like a hammer better though.
- I like that this looks different from our other logos; developer stuff needs to be a little "edgy" IMHO, and this fits the bill. I even like the fonts used here.
- Black & white works well for developer stuff. If we ever want something with a splash of color, could make the eyes glow red. :)
- Comp 3:
- Similar to our current logo but hard to read.
- Comp 4:
- It's staring at me! Make it stop!
- Comp 5:
- Too busy.
- Comp 6:
- Looks too much like the WiFi icon. Or something evil. Or both.
- I do like the typeface used here though.
- Comp 7:
- This one is okay but I've never been big on the "revolution" notion for promoting stuff.
- Comp 8:
- These atoms look like eyes to me, and seems kind of silly anyway.
Alix's feedback
- Comp 1:
- No - could be anyone, no clear link to MDN
- Comp 2:
- Favorite one. Like the modularity (have it hold different components of the MDN). Would look awesome on collateral/swag. However, might be too strong for documentation for ex, we would need a lighter version for subpages of MDN b/c I wouldn't want to stare at it all day.
- Comp 3:
- No - could be anyone.
- Comp 4:
- No - feels like the opposite of what we are (feels like "we're watching you" and not "we're open, friendly, welcoming, and here to help").
- Comp 5:
- No. Too much.
- Comp 6:
- No, feels like the Dharma initiative should use that one, not MDN
- Comp 7:
- Absolutely not. Has negative connotations.
- Comp 8:
- No. Just like the eye, doesn't feel very friendly/welcoming.
