Featured Speaker: Jill Binder - "Improving Speaker Diversity"
Jill Binder is a WordPress freelancer and workshop facilitator. She is running a global WordPress team that encourages women and other underrepresented groups to speak at WordPress events. She wants to spread this work to other techs and non-techs too. She was named one of the top 100 Influencers of WordPress and one of the top 10 Women of WordPress in 2014. http://jillbinder.com
Talk Description
When more people from underrepresented groups start speaking at open source tech events, everybody benefits. At WordCamp Vancouver for WordPress, we started by focusing on women. In 2013, not many had applied. The following year, three times as many women applied and fully half of selected speakers were women. This dramatic shift was no accident. I will share how we accomplished it, some of the lessons we learned along the way, the positive changes that resulted in our community, and how you can use this work in your community.
CHAOSS D&I Working Group Update
The CHAOSS Diversity & Inclusion Working Group has been working hard on an very early set of of goal & metrics for D&I. Two group members Nicole, and Georg will share an early set of goal-metrics for broader feedback on this call - and as an invitation to stay involved.

As a community and developer advocate, Nicole Huesman has applied her aptitude in storytelling to the tech industry, helping shine a light on the importance and impact of the work of her engineering colleagues, from the embedded market (Yocto Project) to the cloud (OpenStack, KVM, Xen). She is particularly passionate about cultivating inclusive communities that welcome diverse perspectives and invite intelligent, thoughtful debate to benefit all of us. She has been an active member of the Women in Open Source and Women of OpenStack groups, helping lead speed mentoring workshops across the OpenStack and Linux communities, and frequently participates in panel discussions focused on diversity- and mentor-related efforts. She graduated from the University of Oregon's School of Journalism, and holds an MBA from Marylhurst University. |

Georg J.P. Link is a Ph.D. student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. His research advances our knowledge in corporate engagement with open source projects. As corporate involvement increases, open source foundations provide guidance and support for open source projects. We only begin to understand the evolution of this triangular relationship. Link's current research focus is to inform this relationship through research into open source project health (CHAOSS project) and new market mechanisms (Bugmark project). |
