Code of Conduct Panel
We are very grateful to have such a knowledgeable panel for this week's call on Code of Conduct in Open Communities. We will ask these questions, and also make time for questions from attendees.
- What would you say have been the biggest challenges in enforcing your project’s Code of Conduct - and why do you think that is?
- In our recent survey of D&I communities, some people indicated a belief their Code of Conduct was ‘watered down’, with enforcement left to people who didn’t care about inclusion. How do you think projects can ensure those taking responsibility for enforcement are invested in inclusive outcomes? For example, should a project owner also be the person responsible for enforcement?
- In our D&I in Open Source survey, we heard that of those who knew their project had a CoC, only 43% believed it was enforced, and fewer still felt safe because it existed. Why do you think that is, and how do you think we can start to shift towards sentiment where people really do feel safer because their community has a CoC?
- There’s interesting HR research that states the cost of keeping a high-performing worker who bullies other workers is as much as $100,000 per year per target. In open source communities, there can also be the perception that someone who is highly productive, or who has been part of the community for a long time, should be regarded differently in CoC enforcement. How has your project dealt with this type of bias in decision-making?
