Jason's Update
- Only half of you have entered Q4 goals. Next week, Jason will start naming names. Get your goals in! (It's already November!)
- Jason is getting grilled re: "where is DevRel putting examples that people can use?" We'll have to do that next year.
- Sean may want us to start reaching out to notable Chrome-only sites to make sure they also work in Firefox.
- Maybe a better job for the WebCompat team instead of us?
- (Dietrich) Is doing QA for some of the wealthiest websites in the world, with our limited resources, really aligned with our mission? Could we have a better impact by focusing on contributions to major, open-source frameworks? The best compatibility story we've ever had is a large userbase; our talking to developers will have an infinitesimal, at best, impact on the scale of hundreds of millions of users.
- (Jason) Salva's contributions to libsass is a great example of us doing this.
- WebAssembly and WebVR will be big topics for us next year
- Are we close to a post on Stylo? (Potch): Digging in, sending emails to folks to figure out how it differs from Servo Style.
- Potch's Hacks post on requestIdleCallback was excellent: https://hacks.mozilla.org/2016/11/cooperative-scheduling-with-requestidlecallback/
Announcements / Requests for Help / Discussion Topics
- [ladybenko] Do we have budget available for translation ES -> EN?
- Spanish universities, by law, must provide materials in Spanish. We have lots of materials in Spanish. Can we pay to translate this stuff?
- MoCo internal translators have declined and asked us to approach outside translators.
- [callahad] Is there a single consistent theme we can rally around for 2017? E.g., Google DevRel's 2015 was "60fps", 2016 was "PWAs", 2017 may be payments or navigator.credentials?
- Ideas: [potch] Reintroducing people to the (modern) web, [jen] Grid is going to be really huge, people are ready to ditch their css frameworks. Components / quasi-OO style guides are hot right now. Openings for accessibility as well. People have a whole new system with grid *and* flexbox. Feels like a back to basics year.
- [potch]: Holy shit, I want to refocus on practitioner meetups. WordCamps. Etc. We already have enough of a line to "thought leaders," but I want to do better with these smaller, regional events.
- [callahad] ...are we really supposed to be making "reusabe examples," or are other teams defining our work for us?
- [jason] It's more about demonstrating our visibility, not necessarily reusability. Jen's layout labs are a hell of an example of something that is visible, discoverable, and useful, but not necessarily "reusable."
- [jen] Our goal is to teach. Teach however works best for you, but also make sure there's a papertrail somewhere for rolling up our activities to management.
- [Havi] Team dinner in Hawaii - let's find the best night for everyone
- Yes! Let's do this. And invite Tech Speakers! Shoot for Wednesday.
- [jen] Re-pitching the DevRel website. Let's actually show up on Thursday! Potch will be at Chrome Developer Summit
- [potch] I did this
Action Items
- [callahad] Add Lin to mailing lists and mozdev GitHub org (done)
- [potch] Update us once you know more about Quantum Style
- [jweathersby] Review DevAdvocacy bugs with Callahad re: bug resolution rates
- [ladybenko] Obtain estimate for translating Spanish content, report back
- [callahad] Email "back to basics" theme idea to devrel list on Tuesday
- [jen] Invite Lin to DevRel website meeting

- people are super excited about layout and CSS, about using the web stack as intended (CSS for styling, HTML for structure, JS for behavior — and getting rid of frameworks). This message is gaining A LOT of traction very quickly.
