This wiki page is a place to collect ideas for updates to the About Mozilla page on www.mozilla.org.

Plan

Our current thinking is that the current About and Causes section should be merged since talking About Mozilla and Mozilla's mission separately just doesn't make much sense. The following is a plan for combining this content.

Causes Section

All content in the Causes section now should be moved or deleted.

To Move

These pages are the key part of the mission message and should be moved to a new Mission page in the About section.

This content has already been moved to a top-level Grants section.

To Delete and Redirect

There may be relevant content from these pages that are worth keeping, but the pages themselves don't need to be migrated.

Not Sure

We haven't decided if completed campaign pages should still be available or if they should be removed. Probably needs to be decided on case by case basis. Anything that should remain can be moved to a more appropriate place.

For future campaigns we can create a central repository for them or add them where appropriate. For instance, the Parks pages live in www.mozilla.org/parks instead of a specific campaign location.

About Section

The main issue in the About section is that the Manifesto is not the best way to introduce people to our community's mission and values. The Manifesto is the foundation for the mission, but we need a new Mission page that can then link to the Manifesto for anyone wanting to learn more. The main About page will also need to be rewritten to focus more on the mission and less on the community structure (which is important but can live on it's own page in the section).

Note: Possible design direction for page could include incorporating Mitchell's Mozilla tree metaphor as a visual way of getting at the complex nature of Mozilla.

Mission

Mozilla's mission is to promote openness, innovation, and opportunity on the web. We do this by creating great software, like the Firefox browser, and providing tools, like the Drumbeat site, that can be used by people to take control of their online lives.

As a non-profit organization, we define success in terms of building communities and enriching people’s lives instead of increasing the price of our stock (guess what: we don’t even have stock). We believe in the power and potential of the Internet and want to see it thrive for everyone, everywhere.

Building a better Internet is an ambitious goal, but we believe that it is possible when people who share our passion get involved. Coders, artists, writers, testers, surfers, students, grandmoms—anyone who uses and cares about the web can help make it even better. Find out how you can help.

Governance

Mozilla is governed by a virtual management team made up of unpaid experts and employees from a range of companies. As an open source project structured as a meritocracy, responsibility is distributed to any community member as they show their abilities through contributions to the project.

Manifesto Page

The current Manifesto landing page is a place holder that we initially intended to improve with a more digestible introductory version of the full contents of the Manifesto. The new Mission page is taking over this role though, so I'd recommend removing the current landing page and having the main Manifesto page be the English version with a prominent way for people to switch to other languages.

Coding Thoughts

Our goal for www.mozilla.org pages is to help advance web standards where possible. This page is light on design elements so there's not much opportunity to use some standards such as canvas or SVG. Our thinking is that this could be a good opportunity to showcase the new WOFF format. Some relevant links:
